DESCRIPTION:Lecturer: Kusche, Jürgen\NSpace geodesy techniques were originally developed to monitor the Earth's gravitational field, its geometry, tectonics, and deformations, and variations of Earth rotation. However it has turned out that they provide, at the same time, powerful tools to observe hydrological water mass variation (e.g. groundwater level changes) and atmospheric water vapor variability. The lecture will briefly touch upon satellite gravimetry (GRACE) and follow-on missions, but as this has been already discussed in the CRC, it will then introduce the measurement principles and physics behind three other techniques: terrestrial gravimetry, GNSS atmosphere remote sensing, and GNSS hydrological loading measurement.

The first lecture, from 13:00-14:20, will give an overview of the most fundamental concepts of cartography, which are relevant for anyone generating maps out of geospatial data. The second lecture, from 14:30-16:00, will provide deep insights into recent and on-going research on algorithmic geodata analytics. In particular, I will present approaches to clustering, aggregating and simplifying geospatial data, which are needed to generate maps of multiple different levels of detail and to provide object representations for geospatial analyses at different scales.

DESCRIPTION:Lecturer: Storm, Hugo\NThis lecture on machine learning in agricultural economics will cover two main aspects.\NIn the first part, I will discuss what machine learning brings to agricultural economics, 2) what is different in agricultural economics compared to general machine learning, and 3) what are crucial aspects to consider. The discussion is kept at a relatively high level and is intended to be useful for multiple disciplines within DETECT. Agricultural economics should understand under which conditions machine learning tools might be helpful in their work, machine learning experts should understand what is different/specific about our use cases, and other DETECT disciplines should be able to relate the discussed methods/challenges to approaches in their discipline.\NIn the second part, I will cover approaches to include theory and domain knowledge in data-driven methods. Specifically, I will cover Bayesian Probabilistic Programming as an approach to this. The approach is relevant for our work in DETECT B04. The examples are on estimating yields and crop growth models (building on an example from a crop model presented in the DETECT lecture from Thomas Gaiser). Hence, they should be relevant for various DETECT disciplines.
