Integrated Research Training Group (IRTG)

The Integrated Research Training Group (IRTG) has been established with the funding decision of the SFB1502/CRC1502. The IRTG is integrated in the already existing Bonn International Graduate School “Land and Food” as a separate track specifically designed for the needs within the interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary research approach of the CRC. Hosting the IRTG within the BIGS-LF guarantees that the IRTG is in line with the general BIGS philosophy and implemented at the University of Bonn. The IRTG takes a holistic approach to guide qualification of the CRC PhD students in the interdisciplinary approach of the CRC to achieve personal and scientific development, critical reflection and networking competencies, and thus academic independence.

Structure

The CRC-IRTG designs and organizes a track within the BIGS “Land and Food” program that follows the same structure as for all BIGS PhD students. That is, a minimum of 15 credit points (CP; with 0.5 CPs per course day) has to be achieved (see Figure 2). The IRTG therethrough ensures access to information and resources to young researchers by providing scientific, HPC, RDM and soft skill modules, excursions, a lecture series with assignments and the possibility to create Wikis, and a research seminar.

CRC Lecture Series

To introduce the PhD students to interdisciplinary science conducted in the CRC, a lecture series is held twice a year. The series addresses the different disciplines in an introductory fashion, including concepts and techniques relevant for research in modelling and observation of the water cycle, as well as of the land surface and its use, also beyond what is applied in current CRC projects.
The number of participants for specific courses might be limited. Anyone interested to participate in a specific course has to check admission with the responsible lecturer listed in the table of lectures below.

Land and Climate Seminar

“The land surface in the climate system”

In the DETECT Land & Climate Seminar, scientists of the CRC present the research progress of their project, but also international speakers external to the CRC are invited to present results of their investigations addressing issues within the wider context of the CRC, including scientists associated with projects of the CRC.

The seminar takes place irregularly on Mondays starting at 10:15. After an approximately 45 min. talk the presenters are happy to answer questions in a short discussion. The event is held via Zoom. The IRTG guides the qualification of the CRC PhD students and young PostDocs in the interdisciplinary approach of the CRC. The IRTG is integrated into the Bonn International Graduate School “Land and Food” (BIGS-LF) as a separate track specifically designed for the needs within the interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary research approach of the CRC. The IRTG is thus a joint effort of (1) the DETECT PIs and invited speakers for subject specific knowledge transfer for the transdisciplinary scientific work in DETECT, (2) the BIGS-LF for additional, non-specific qualification, as soft skills and science communication and, (3) the proactive contributions of the PhD students and young PostDocs involved.
